Guide to StreetLaw.com

LEAP-Kids and the Pennsylvania Bar Association promote law-related and civic education across Pennsylvania. As a service to educators, we have been gathering resources for teachers and schools to use. Please check out our websites at www.leapkids.com and www.pabar.org. But also take a look below, as we provide a guide to materials from Street Law, one of the major national programs in the field of law-related and civic education.

Like a lot of organizations that have been around for quite a while - in the case of Street Law, 30 years - Street Law has produced so much material that it can be hard to figure out how to find what you need. One approach is to send a note to Street Law's clearinghouse at clearinghouse@streetlaw.org or to call them at 301-589-1130.

Over the past few years, however, Street Law has tried to place most of what it offers on its web site. Here area few of the places most visited on the site:

  • Download free competition style mock trials [link]
  • Get information about and an application for Street Law's Supreme Court Summer Institute (and to see materials from previous institutes, available free to you) [link]
  • Learn about and to order Street Law's new video based on the award-winning television series "Homicide: Life on the Street" [link]
  • Download a free copy of Street Law's lessons for youth courts [link]
  • Learn about Street Law's special programs for teen parents, school resource officers, juvenile justice, conflict resolution, and crime prevention [link]
  • Access the new web site created by Street Law and the Supreme Court Historical Society for teaching and learning about landmark cases [link]; To access the answer key for this material, contact Lee Arbetman.
  • If you are part of the new movement to teach about forensics, visit the web site of media partner Court TV to download free curriculum materials [link]
  • If you are using the 6th edition of the Street Law textbook, you'll want to explore with your students the rich resources on the book's website [link]

The Street Law organization does not sell the Street Law textbook; Glencoe/McGraw-Hill does. A spiffy, new 7th edition of Street Law will appear this spring for preview and will be available for sale this summer, in time for the fall, 2004 semester. To contact Glencoe, call 1-800-334-7344 or talk to the Glencoe representative who services your school.

The national law-related education program, Youth for Justice, is developing a web site with a wide range of resources for LRE teachers and supporters. You can visit this web site at www.youthforjustice.org. From this site you can easily visit the sites of the national LRE programs as well as the sites maintained by each state LRE center. LEAP-Kids is featured as the Pennsylvania LRE Center.
